Restoring the Caledonian Forest

Glen Affric is one of the largest surviving examples of the ancient pinewoods that once were part of the great Caledonian Forest across the Scottish Highlands. Today barely 1-percent of the forest remains but Trees for Life are working across many fronts to restore this once great woodland and in the process rewild the Highlands.

2004: A Scottish Space Odyssey

In October 2004 Brian Binnie piloted the Burt Rutan designed Spaceship One winged spacecraft to a record breaking 69.6 miles above the Earth breaking the previous record set by the X-15 in 1963 and in so doing became Scotland’s first astronaut.

Weaving Tartan with Glass: Alicia MacInnes Design

Tartan is a cultural icon of Scotland. Traditionally it is a patterned woven cloth, typically wool, that consists of criss-crossed bands of color both vertically and horizontally creating a distinctive pattern of squares and lines. Today tartan is no longer limited to textiles – the term has come to mean the pattern itself as much as a cloth and one Glasgow artistan is proving this by creating dazzling tartan inspired designs using fused glass.

A Breed Apart: The Eriskay Pony

The Eriskay pony may well be the last of the native breed Hebridean ponies, possibly dating to the time of the Picts in Scotland. Today it is critically endangered with population estimates ranging from a few hundred to a few dozen. On the Isles of Eriskay and Uist, Comann Each Nan Eilean - The Eriskay Pony Society is working to save the pony from extinction.
